Veteran’s Day – 2019

Having lived in various places and among a host of friends who have or still do belong to the US military, days like Veteran’s Day have taken on more and more meaning in our lives. We are so thankful for those who serve this country daily by sacrificing the comforts of living at home, time with their families, and in some cases their lives. THANK YOU VETERANS!!

An oddity about living abroad (and we’ve found this to be true in all the places we’ve lived) is that even though Reed gets US holidays off, sometimes the kids still have school. Veteran’s Day is one of those holidays for us. We call them ‘golden holidays’. Parents off and kids in school. Yahoo!!! So we decided to take Mary to 1st Circle on Zahran Street to see all the pet stores. And maybe even buy something!

This street is so crazy, rows and rows of shops selling pets: cats, dogs, parrots, fish, canarys, etc. It’s fun to walk up and down the street and look at all the animals. Mary had a great time seeing all the animals and one of the shop owners got out of couple of fluffy little puppies for her to pet. She was quite nervous, but petted them and enjoyed it.

Reed wanted to get some fish. For those of you who have know Reed for a while know that he loves the water and the fish that swim in it. When he was younger, he wanted to be a marine biologist. His first big purchase when he was a kid was a fish tank! After he moved to college, he got another one and had two. They were so great! Well, he’d like to start up the hobby again. Hence, the trip to pet alley. It was finally time to dive in and get it!

But things don’t always go to plan. Reed, Angie, and Mary arrived at 1st Circle and noted quickly that almost all of the shops were closed! Total bummer. We should have asked one of the shop owners when everything would open, but didn’t. My theory is that they are open in the afternoons when things cool off a bit. Or maybe only open on weekends when business picks up. Either way, we didn’t have much to see. We hit up the few shops that were open, enjoyed what we could see, and then headed home; petless.

To soothe our sorrows, we stopped by one of the most famous arabic sweets shops in town, Nafisa Sweets. It was our first time inside and I can tell you, we’ll be back!

We brought our treats home, ate lunch, and then gave our treats a try. Mmmmm!!

A light selection of treats from Nafisa Sweets

These treats were so great!!! Angie, Mary, and I all had a great time tasting these. Fresh stuff like this tastes amazing!! I didn’t think there would be any left for the other kids that were still in school, but we managed to save a few for them. They’re going to love ’em! WE SURE DID!!!

Nafisa Sweets are so delicious…
